We were original owners of a '79 F-150. We retired it in 1993. Well, actually we sold it for parts to a guy restoring a '79. I think he drove it home. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just my parent's vehicle and I had just bought my first car so we didn't need it.
The different mindsets behind panela 3 and 4 are part of why there are so many arguments about finances.
Adre sees a car that's twice as expensive as the one she's seeing. Hilde knows that the car that's twice as expensive is going to last WAY more than twice as long; it's the cheaper option for the lifetime of the product.

The one I remember as a kid is a family that had absolute PILES of cheap toys from Walgreens all over the house... all in various states of broken, shattered, or missing parts, all less than a year or two old.
For the same price they could have had about half as many but they would all be whole and intact even after years.

Yep. There are plenty of exceptions. But typically larger means more fuel.
My 2002 Outback(That I avoid driving due to fuel costs and size and plan to get rid of due to them) gets 10l/100km. The now dead Honda City(1982) was about 7l/100km.
(Also have a 2 seat 80's Suzuki Hatch(EV converted) and motorcycle(6l/100km) that I use 90% of the time.)

characters in comic "you expect a car to last four years"
me, carefully side-eyeing my 13 year old car that in good condition and reliable as ever... XD
I can understand Adri not knowing stuff about cars 'cause I'm literally the same in that regard but even Adri should know that 4 years is the bare minimum that a car should last. otherwise you're wasting to much money buying replacement cars in the long run.

When you're struggling, all you can do is buy the cheapest car you can off Craigslist. You end up with something people are selling for $1000, and then you're in terror that it'll break down because that purchase cleaned you out so you can't afford repairs, can't even afford maintenance when every month your account hits with $5 of the red, and most of the time repairs are gonna cost more than finding another $1000 Craigslist car and rolling the dice. Two years later, it happens, and you have to scrape together everything you had and everything you can get to get another.
Do this long enough, and you forget that cars can last longer. You lose sight of the possibility of not suffering.

It creeps its way into anything. And you know you're "wasting" money, but you don't have the ability to pull together $7000 for a car that'll last 5-10 years. You don't have the money to spend $100 on a pair of boots that'll last ten years, so you buy $30 boots every year. You don't have the $15 to buy the two-pack, so you spend $10 on the one-pack and $10 later when it runs out. You buy the cheapest food and deal with getting sick, and you don't go to the doctor because you can't pay, so you wait until it's bad enough to go to the ER, and then you can't get credit for anything ever again because of medical debt.
Poor people are punished for being poor, because the rich can keep exploiting them. Entire industries push to keep the economy this way. Title loans, payday loans, check cashing shops, all of it. I'm only barely just above that level myself, but one significant catastrophe could easily see me homeless, followed by dead within a month when I lose access to medical care. The only reason I've weathered the storms I have is because of insane amounts of help from friends and family.

Capitalism is like an MMPOG. The game itself isn't bad, even worth playing, but the players...
Some will honor the spirit and play as intended. Some will see what they can get away with and exploit but are still honorable about it. And some will pull any cheat, bend any rule until it screams, and do whatever they can to screw over others for fun and/or profit.

The Chinese government hasn't even ever been truly communist, but I wouldn't expect you to understand that. Your understanding of history is obviously seriously lacking. And as I've mentioned before, and you clearly don't grasp, communism is hardly the only alternative to capitalism.
However, their socialist economic system has been responsible for bringing more people out of poverty more quickly than pretty much any system in history, as well as double-digit economic growth for years, far outperforming our economic system.
Their government is despicable on many other levels, though.

What is with people and these new cars! I've never even /driven/ a car that was that new!
(Then again I like older machines, they tend to be easier to fix and you don't feel as guilty about doing.. interesting things to keep them on the road or about the dints and damage that comes from life.)

dude, I know. I've been in this for quite some time. Enough to know that there is, albeit an uncommon "pouch vore" tag. I didn't mean to offend anyone, it's just... I don't know, it's just that the kangaroo pouch really does look a bit like a vore. All of this bulges, keeping your baby in... Or someone else....
If I hadn't been stupid when I was younger, I know I'd still have my '93 Saturn coupe... As it is, all our current vehicles are over 10 years old (the truck is 27) and well over 150k miles on all of them. The Versa has over 210k and still runs like a top.
In this scenario, I kinda side with Hilde. Ali is precious cargo and should be transported in a safer vehicle. Lousy gas mileage is a small price to pay for extra protection. It's already been shown that there are a lot of bigger vehicles in that town, so a small car would be another gamble like the last time.
Also love the raspberry war going on in the background :3 Mouse looks famiilliar...

Bigger is only safer against smaller. No safer against others of the same size or on their own.
Random link, from 15 years ago but still: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/lif.....article622809/
SUVs exist mostly because it's more profitable to make bigger cars and charge more for them(As making a car half the size doesn't make them half as cheap.).
Combine that with 'everyone is getting them so they must be safer' and 'maybe I'd like to go camping sometime'(But nearly never do) you have a world where they are popular.

Like I said on DA, 2001 car go brr.
Also, SUVs are not the safest vehicle you can drive: RVs are safer. And, if you have a commercial driving licence, you can drive something even safer: a big rig.
Plus, safety doesn't matter when you get hit by a SD40. Don't ask why I'm giving unsolicited car advice on a furry site, it's what I do!

SUV has changed a lot in the meaning and design since they were first put on the market, I think. Though yes, they do have more of a chance to roll over than a closer to the ground vehicle, they are heavier, which tend to fare better in crashes, and tend to have a lot of safety features that make them safer overall compared to some other vehicles.
It's not rollover or whatever that determines the safety, it's who wins when you get into an accident with another vehicle.
I hate that argument, but it's true: When an SUV and a compact get into a crash, the SUV is going to win in the vast majority of cases. It leads to an arms race of heavier vs lighter which is bad for us all, but people base their car purchases on what's good for them, not what's good for society.

Not to mention there's a point where they stop making parts for them. You can't keep driving it the starter goes out and you can't find one to fix it. Unfortunately, you're right, there's going to be a limit to how long it'll last, unless they make the 3D printing wet dream come true where you can just go to a center and have them make any part you want, assuming we get the right to repair.
