The shield I have been working on for use in the SCA rapier combat. Based ot off the Scottish Targe (a larger round shield.) From what I have read, the targe runs between 18 & 20something inches in diameter. Mine was cut to be 20in, but with sanding its probably a bit smaller.
Cloak is my favorite parry device, but it doesnt work so well in a group melee and you need alot of space to use it properly. Got an event coming up this weekend thats going to be in a local fort, and its fairly confined. Shield is the best defense. Now I have one.
My dad cut the basic shield blank, I did the drilling and mounting the straps. The black edging is duct tape, using it to hold everything together wile I drill holes to mount something permanent to keep the edges from being beaten to hell.

Very interesting; what do you work as an SCA? Roman? Celt? Greek?
Replace teh duct tape edging for some leather (or vinyl) stripping and roofing nails and paint the shield in very vibrant colors. As a bit of knowledge, the reason Celt warriors painted their shields in bright colors was to actually conceal the grain of the wood, so that an enemy warrior would not strike the shield along the grain, where the wood is weakest, therefore splitting the shield with one blow.
Bet you didn't know that. ;)

Dont really have a proper persona yet. Going to work on it in the near future when I get a chance. The name I chose & got approved is Norse, but thats it so far.
Planning on putting a full leather front and attaching it with the heavy furnature nails. But, that wont happen till Pennsic. For now, its duct tape & garden hose covered with a heavy denim. Just dont have all the tools I need.
Id heard that one before, think it was mentioned in one of the museums I went to in England.

The WWII reinactment sounds interesting! Ive done a bit of the Civil War reinactment (but not since I left Missouri) and the SCA. Was odd doing the Civil War reainactments as I was 1/4th the age of everyone else, but <shrugs>.
I used o raid my dad's collection of Osprey books for information. Great when it comes to useless trivia and helps when fghting in the SCA.
I hope it works out as well. Measuring up the anchor holes for the rim now.
