Remy's heart pounded as he made his way through the school hallway. On Saturday night, the school would be hosting it's Winter Dance in the gym.
At first Remy wasn't up to attending it. Being surrounded by so many other noisy students would make him nervous.
But his parents thoroughly encouraged him to go. "Ask your friend Stephanie to go with you," his mother told him. "She would love to accompany you."
His father was also in favor of the idea. "I think you would have a good time with her," he said. "But," he paused, and shrugged his shoulders. "It's all up to you."
Remy thought about the event all morning. So much that he couldn't concentrate on his schoolwork or assignments. He also tried not to look at Stephanie sitting near him in class, fearing she would catch on.
When the bell rang, Remy and his classmates headed out the door for lunch.
Remy couldn't take it anymore. He had to talk to Stephanie. Taking a deep breath, he approached her from behind.
He gave her a light tap on the shoulder and she turned around.
"Hi," he said nervously. "Stephanie, uh, well..."
"Yeah?"
Remy tried to keep his head up and his eyes leveled. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure, what is it?"
"You're not doing anything on Saturday night are you?"
Stephanie shook her head. "No, not really. Why?"
"Well, if you're up to it, you- can come with me to..."
"Remy," Stephanie smiled, "are you asking me out to the Winter Dance?"
At that moment Remy's heart pounded like a jackhammer. "Yes," he said without thinking.
"Remy," Stephanie paused, "I would love to go with you to the dance ."
Remy's face lit up. "Really? You would?"
"Sure. See you Saturday." She headed out towards the lunch tables.
