Eureka! an aviation Thursday Prompt
*smiles... a bit of history, and a nod to a pilot who did not chase glory's skirts just for a name and reputation. War is not won by the few, but by the many who are just regular folks like you and me.

Fighter pilots make headlines, bomber pilots make history. So where does that leave ground-attack pilots? ;)
I'm guessing the part about the barn door actually happened?
I'm currently reading a book about RAF Bomber Command during WW2, I didn't realise so many of their crew were from the Commonwealth and even the USA.

Yes... as much as we know for sure about anything in history, it supposedly happened. I was also amazed to learn the Americans made a lot of the engines for the Lancaster. I found this one (you have to love youtube) and it points out the Lancaster had a twin engine prototype.

I got to see Canada's flying Lancaster close up many years ago, and it is so thin looking.

I've heard war described as the epitome of a team effort, someone has to direct those masses otherwise it just descends into an undignified brawl, traditionally that was the upper aristocratic classes, some of whom were excellent, others...not so much. Say what you like about the Soviets in the Second World War but they tended to promote on merit...and shot the ones who weren't performing up to standard of course. I'm not so sure about the Germans, there were an awful lot of 'vons' in the leadership but they were merit based as well as far as I'm aware.
But then this is a subset of the general Great Man theory of history, isn't it? ;)
