She uses that because she is blind (she got blind when in a toxic relationship, when her ex-partner did it to her). Like lizards, she uses her tongue to sense the environment, which helps her "see" things. Her hearing is also very good because of that. She can see with the help of the crystals on her tail and the "third eye" in her head, but that requires a lot of focus and it's not very well (as bad as legally blind people)
