Here's my first crack at 3D modeling using a keen freeware program called Sculptris!
http://www.sculptris.com/
Everyone; Go download sculptris and craft something fun and unique! go go go
This model is actually kind of a failure, and I'm gonna have to re-sculpt it. The reason being that I used too many components to build it and the program crashes each time I attempt to paint it. The problem was I didnt know the full functionality of the 'grab' tool, which is used to grab sections of the model and stretch it indefinitely. Instead I built each part of Scott here out of balls; Head, neck, torso, lower body, each arm and leg segment, each finger, etc. My bad. Because of this the inner mesh of this model is a mess. But the program is so easy to use I'll make another one sometime.

Very cool though even if it's not a success. I suppose for now it's the concept that counts.
It's a cool learning process though. I know my fist thing that I modeled I had so many parts, like your situation it would crash Maya sometimes. So now that i know I can use fewer polys I definitely will and just mold the object from there.
