Is Sonic Gems worth the price of adminssion? I'd think so, yeah. Really the only games worth playing on it are Sonic CD and Sonic The Fighters. The rest of the disc is just Game Gear games that underline why Game Gear didn't succeed and a pretty bad racing game. The pictures in the Extras are fun to look at the first time, but that's really about it. But still, it's worth it for Fighters and CD. I just wish Sonic Team would smarten up and release some of the rarer Sonic games on a Sonic collection. I'd really like the chance to play Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic Pocket Adventure, and you'd think that after 3 Sonic collections now(Jam, Mega and now Gems), you'd at least get that chance. But I digress.
One of the most fun parts of Sonic CD was the big race between between Metal Sonic and Sonic on Stardust Speedway. My memory has kind of diluted the game from the first time I played it, since the levels seem to be a lot more frustrating than they should be, and the control feels a bit wonky. But it's still fun, and the Past-Present-Future levels was a really neat idea. The race against Metal Sonic is a little short though. I'd like to have multiple races or race through a whole big level on one path against him. Zoom zoom.
A new side-scrolling Sonic game in the same vein as the old-school Sonic games on the current or next-gen systems would rock my socks off, getting back to what Sonic is really about. Flipping insane tricks on loops, curls and springs at hyper speeds instead of running around tethered to two other characters or clumsily trying to run up a wall in 3D. Some games are just meant to be 2D, really...
Sonic and Metal Sonic are SEGA/Sonic Team, and I love them so much
