The twin bears, along with the other constellations, keep track of the astral bodies' movements to ensure that balance is maintained in the heavens. If ever the celestial movements were thrown out of balance, it would signify an event even the gods could not foresee. Thankfully, the stars haven't acted out of order for the last few hundred years, and it should remain as such...
