Been talking to a number of other furry artists about our quality of life.

Hmmmmm idk.
The last union I was in took thousands of dollars from me and then denied me benefits when I got sick, and then took my pension when I got laid off.
I'm not against unionization, it's good for a lot of people. But if I can continue doing furry art as a career by myself without any outside interference, I would always prefer that.

I'm sorry that was your experience, I know there are quite a few out there that have unfortunately not made a good return on paid dues. I'm fortunate that my union job treats me well, but I know that hasn't been everyone's experience. (Electrical and HVAC unions have burnt many buddies of mine)
In my mind, a furry artisan union would operate similarly to how IATSE and AFSCME operate. It would be an org that would help to set a "minimum wage" for artists (like $25-$30 as a bare minimum rate with the artist able to raise that price as they see fit, it would moreso prevent artists being underpaid for their labor), and 3-4% in dues would go towards financial, tax, and legal assistance (esp with AI becoming a bigger threat to our livelihoods), since many artists including myself have struggled with the business end of being an artist. But that's a very long and rocky road ahead. For now, it's an idea born from being a furry artist fed up with how capitalism treats artists and the continuously deepening economic inequality seen across the board.
