For my latest stream commission from
T-Bone/RoboMax, I decided to go with Mercedes the kitsune, and her friend Ehoro, the savannah hare luck spirit. Of course, as noted in the story, Ehoro's luck may always be good for her in the long term, but not necessarily good in the short term... and not necessarily great for those around her either. So here we have Mercedes unintentionally catching the splash from a passing car and saving Ehoro from getting wet in the process. Much to her own annoyance here.

"Elemental resistance is like ice too thick outside den door. You must negotiate, like skating rink of potential slipperies. It is logical making sense."
"Huff. It was a puddle."
"Poodles, yes. They are almost as smelly when wet as you. Here is towel, from generous washing dryer. (Flumph.)"

Heh. While it isn't obvious unless you check the URL for the 'Download' link above, the original filename that
T-Bone gave the picture was 'internal_screaming'.
And I've been in the 'too stunned to decide how to react' state a couple of times myself.

Part of the world background in these stories is that in general shapeshifters don't actually physically change shape, they just cast psychic illusions so that normal people see them as human. I set it up that way as a way to explain how having 'the Sight' works (you're immune to the psychic projections) and why reflections in mirrors show the true form. That in turn is why she wears a trenchcoat most of the time: it lets her move about in public among humans and they're less likely to see enough of her in reflections to notice that she isn't actually human.
I did get a commission sort of playing with this here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/49413316/.
She can 'take' other forms, but the vixen is her true form, and her default human form is of a woman in her late twenties of primarily Japanese ancestry. She can maintain that one subconsciously; any other form would require her to focus on it, and if the body shape doesn't match that complicates matters.
Though one of the characters in the 'Mardi Gras' story looked about ten years old but projected an illusion of being eighteen and a lot taller... that was part of how Marie (a human with the Sight) realized what was going on, because she was the only person in the crowd looking down to meet the character's eyes.
I have four and a half stories at in this world so far, starting at https://www.furaffinity.net/view/27288625/ and tagged with previous/next links.
As you may have noticed, I can get pretty deep into my world-building. Several plot points here have been inspired by 'but how would that actually work?' thoughts.

Ah I see, thanks! I was going to ask what does she see when looking in the mirror when wearing a psychic projection, but that link depicts it nicely!
And yes, that's one of the most fun way's to write a story, to try to consider the implications and how it would function.
