If you throw your computer out of a three story window enough times, the fur will render itself.
Nah, your best bet is to just study fur (real and drawn), and to try to emulate it as best you can with brushes and filters.
But the way you do fur is good enough, in my opinion.
Also, you can try googling for guides.

Uhm, it is very difficult to describe a way to render fur, it is way more easy to show you on an image *havn't got any wip's atm :<* you need: underpainting with light and shadow parts blocked in, for each area an even darker colour *to simulate the shadows of fur-stands* a lighter colour than the base, and a very light colour *or two-or three* than the base. single stands are blocked with a big brush, airbrush is cool and from that-you go detailing with smaller brushes and getting lighter in colour. does that make sense x.x?
*runs off to create a wip to show you xD*

in most cases, you don't need to render the fur, just hint it.
But if you really want to render detailed fur, Start with a darker color than the actual fur and block in this color. Then use a small, pressure controlled size and opacity brush; and go by short strokes with the main fur color. Then do another run, with a lighter color where you think highlights should go. You can also use some color variation since not every hair is the same color.
|I wish i could provide some visual help, but i'm on the run right now.
