Concerto for Soprano Saxophone: V. Finale (Mackey)
The closing movement of this epic piece I have to say is also the most difficult thing I ever had to learn. It was a wonder to work with this many great musicians, and thank you all for listening through this.
I play Marimba in this movement, and Crotales from 2:22 to 2:49
Also 4:53 is the hardest line I have ever had to learn, and this isn't cromatic lines we are talking about, it is a series of different made up scales by the composer, all in different numbers of tuples.

Awesome! That was a ton of fun! I am not sure, but I think the scales are octatonic...? Possibly? >o< I can't tell for sure.
Also, I have to have a big music dork moment here. I recognized that chorale at the beginning and went digging through my CDs because I knew I'd heard it before. It's from Gabrieli's "Sonata pian e forte" (1597). The only reason I know that is Corigliano used the same chorale in the last movement of his clarinet concerto. There. Music dork moment end. ^o^

Oh nonono... I really am not that knowledgeable. I hated music history in college and just barely got by. The only reason I knew this was because I'm a clarinet player and was obsessed with that concerto for a few years. It's a very angry and sad piece.... seems to be a theme for Corigliano's music... XD
I think it's funny that Mackey credited Corigliano but not Gabrieli, since Corigliano was already quoting the other composer's work in that chorale section. However, knowing Corigliano's attitude and reputation, it probably was a wise move on Mackey's part. (ooo burn hehe)

Very impressive altogether! I'm astonished at the musicality and the ability amongst the players to tackle something that demanding. Truly a virtuoso work. The saxophone player had to be outright phenomenal to handle this last movement on top of all the rest. And I can hear it in those scales, definitely a very challenging section!
Now I'm going to have to up the ante with my Xylophone Concerto.
