Concerto for Soprano Saxophone: I. Prelude (Mackey)
This is our performance of a recent piece by John Mackey, a concerto for soprano saxophone. This is so new in fact that we were one of the first groups to perform it.
I am playing the marimba. This is also one of the most difficult pieces I have played, not just this movement but all of them.

You're very welcome. It comes to understanding that you haven't heard this piece, I think this piece was written around 2007 or something like that, and again we were like only the third group to ever play it. At first I hated the piece, because the marimba parts I play are ridiculously hard and either way are barely heard, but I learned to love it anyway. It is a fun sounding piece.
That also explains why my part had a lot of flaws. In one movement I had notes that were two octaves below the lowest note of the marimba. It is really troublesome during rehearsals to have to try and figure that kind of stuff out. Yes he is a great composer and I love the sound of the piece, still, composers should know at least the ranges of the instruments. Thank you for listening!
Yeah, there was one or two parts in Sasparilla that was a little unkind to the bari sax, too....but then, he essentially wrote that bari sax part specifically for me, because he loved how well I tackled the bari sax part of his band arrangement of his piece "Redline Tango" (of which my university band was one of the first to perform as well).
I have heard Redline Tango. I wonder what his response was to the other groups. The band to premiere this concerto was a military band I believe, and they premiered it I think 2 weeks before we performend it in Reno, Nevada, and either in the same day or the day before another group had performed it (I don't remember the name of the band). If you don't mind me asking, where did you study?
Now that is definitely a challenging sounding piece, especially for band. The Sax part though sounds well suited to the instrument.
The Marimba is definitely an instrument that shines when the rest of the band is quiet. It really gets overshadowed even at mf. But it does add a lot of interesting wood effects. I'd be interested in seeing that part. I haven't touched a mallet instrument though since my band days back in the 90s. Alas!
