After a long day of arcane studies and work, Morty decided to splurge a little on food and stuffed himself quite a bit, enough to put him in to the eventual food coma. Thanks to him being a bellymancer, this gorging of food does give some benefits later on when he wakes up. So was it an indulgence or a strategic move? Also one of the rare times he actually gets sleep... so there could also be that motive.
