I feel like I ruined my review of this story when I discussed all that you accomplished through writing 'Emily's Constapation'. Hopefully I won't goof up and make a comment on a different story when you release the second part of this one. :)

This story does what I feel you excel best with given The Pokemon World. This being mixed-species families that feel very natural over being random, or forced to make a point.
Advocating for all the ways in which a family can be a family IRL is quite tricky. You can see lots of examples of it being done to just appease an audience for a particular time and/or fad through the larger media producers out there. Sometimes they do it without breaking the flow of the story. Unfortunately, in a lot of shows and movies, you get more of a feeling that someone in the company went to the writer(s) and said, "Put in a gay couple somewhere to show we are cool with the LGBTQs out there!".
Outside of your writing, I can say that only Tiny Ones Transport Service (T.O.T.S.) on Disney Jr. did a fantastic job of showcasing diversity in all kinds of ways without it breaking the flow of the story being told. T.O.T.S., as you do when writing your Pokemon stories, seamlessly shows a world where all kinds are seen for who they are over what they are. (Much like I would like to be viewed as someone who is capable of doing many things someone who is sighted can do if given the tools to utilize my abilities without the benefit of physical eyesight. Sadly, as I was even reminded only a few days ago, I'm still 'The Blind Guy' before anything else in the eyes of the everyday individual.).
