As a young fox, Tod loved to read. Whenever Widow Tweed went to town, she would return with storybooks from the library that she would read to him as bedtime stories. One story that Todd enjoyed most was that of John Carter of Mars. He loved hearing about the daring adventures of the stoic titular character, John Carter, how he battled monsters and fought for the honor and love of the lovely Martian princess, Dejah Thoris. When Tod grew older, he began to read the stories on his own. He quickly noticed that the Widow had left out many details of the narrative, specifically how everyone, including the princess, was scantily clad, nearly naked! Even as an older fox, he still loves reading the stories and daydreaming about being John Carter, with a certain vixen filling the role of Dejah Thoris.
