THE ELKHOUND LAUGHED with satisfaction. “No, my dear, I was fortunate. I was able to retrieve the talisman and evade the demon.”
The red hind chuckled as her host spoke at length about himself and his fantastical adventure. “And so humble about it.”
The great, shaggy dog scoffed with a grin, “Why, I do believe you’re trying to doubt the veracity of my story.”
The hind pushed back a lock of hair as she swirled her champagne flute around, “Perish the thought, Richard…”
Richard sat down on the edge of his bed and smiled, “Well, I can only imagine why you came back to my place, then.”
His guest smiled slightly, “Oh, I think you know…” She sipped up the last of the champagne and set the glass down.
Richard sighed and allowed her to play with his shaggy muzzle. His tail reflexively twitched as he watched her reach behind her back to unzip the back of her dress. She tittered when she slapped his hand away from the strap on her shoulder. Instead, she coquettishly flipped it over herself and maneuvered her arm to slide it from the strap.
The elk hound’s eyes slowly widened and then blared open when she slipped her arm free and then peeled her dress forward. As the fabric was pulled free, mist and fur disentangled and the dress strap became a long fox tail, several fox tails. The hind sneered as she “peeled back” her dress and flesh to reveal she was a male fox spirit in long black robes. Richard’s heart nearly stopped at the familiar sight of “the demon’s” face.
“Mr. Avery,” the fox said with cruel pleasure on his tongue.
“Lǐngzhǔ Huī…” the elkhound gasped and quickly rolled over the bed. Richard sprang to his feet, only to come face to face with the fox spirit.
“Ah… you do remember, Mr. Avery, how nice.” Long, delicate fingers snatched the canine by his throat with a tiger’s grip. “As I said, I believe you know why I am here…”
The elkhound whined and nodded as he felt the pressure on his jugular.
“Very good…” Huī smiled with satisfaction. He released the elk hound and followed him as the mortal hound cautiously approached a small painting on a nearby wall. The fox watched with rapt attention as his old adversary pulled the fixture back and exposed a safe that the elkhound then unlocked. Huī then coaxed Richard aside.
Richard, with his breathing unsteady and slightly quickened, stood to one side near a small writing desk where he stealthily scooped up a silver letter opener and held it low and around the side of his hip. He watched Huī gingerly pluck out a pendant and cradle it in his black hands. The elkhound winced and grunted as a fox tail slipped up his leg, wrapped around his wrist and twisted it. Richard dropped his improvised weapon.
“Now, now, Mr. Avery,” Huī remarked. He turned his face to Richard’s, “Let’s not spoil the evening just yet…”
