A scene from Wake of the Fallen Moon, a D&D campaign we stream on Sundays.
I can't spoil too much, yet, because the story is still in progress!
However, the parts that have been revealed:
When Jupiter was young, he was in training to replace the captain of a famous ship, who was getting old and looking to retire. He was a promising candidate, and had a bright life of adventure ahead of him aboard the ship - something that's highly valued in the flotilla society he's from.
Shortly before the captain decided on his protégé, Jupiter was diagnosed with a terminal/chronic illness (the details of which are still being uncovered by the party). The captain decided not to train Jupiter, fearing that he wouldn't survive long enough to train a replacement for himself. The dialogue here is a memory of that conversation.
Years later, Jupiter witnessed a shipwreck: the same ship, pulled into a rocky cove by a tricky current. Although the ship was eventually saved, he took some vengeful glee in the idea that the captain who replaced him had nearly destroyed the ship, after all.
