Choose Your Own Adventure: A Gift for Lucky
Lucky was hard at work in his hut. He held a vial of liquid in each hand. He eyed the green liquid in his right hand and then the yellow liquid in the left. Both were vital ingredients in the potion he was working on and they needed to be added at the same time in the same quantities but they were very volatile and couldn't mix with each other. He leaned close to his cluttered work station, his face inches away and began to pour the two vial into a flask of blue liquid. The two streams trickled into the flash, causing it to glow and flicker, like a swirling thunderstorm inside.
A sudden crash startled the hippo. The loud noise made him jump and he splashed the last drops of the vials into each other. They ignited with a loud POP and a puff of greenish-yellow smoke wafted away and into Lucky's nostrils. The effect was instantaneous: Lucky forgot what he had been doing.
“Sorry!” Mystic said from the doorway. The orca shivered slightly as he warmed himself up, “It's awfully windy outside, it must have caught the door!”
“Huh? Oh, Hi Mystic!” the hippo greeted as he gave his friend a hug, “What a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting to see you today!” The orca gave his friend a warm squeeze but his brow furrowed in confusion.”
“You invited me over during lunch, remember?”
“Lunch? No, I don't remember.” This time Lucky looked confused. He checked the time to discover lunch had been a few hours ago but he didn't remember what he ate. Or that it had even been lunch time. “I, uh... something must have happened.” He then discovered the empty vials in his hands. He inspected them and gave them a sniff. “Oh, that must be it. I must have accidentally mixed these two ingredients. They cause an amnesiac effect when combined!”
“Are you alright?” Mystic asked, concerned.
“Oh yes, it only effects short term memory and it will wear off soon, nothing to worry about!”
“Life is always interesting around here with the accidental side effects of your alchemy!” Mystic smiled and held out a blue book with golden runes written on the cover, “Here, I brought you a gift! I thought you might want to try using a spell book sometime. It may be less unpredictable that mixing potions.”
“Spells?” Lucky took the book and leafed through a few pages, “Thanks, but spells can be just as unpredictable as potions. You have to assume that whoever wrote them got all of the details right and took good notes. See?” Lucky held up a page and pointed to a spell labeled Tree Spell. “I don't know if this spell is supposed to grow a tree, or be used on a tree, or turns you into a tree! By using alchemy I can finely calibrate a potion to do whatever I want it to do by mixing effects.”
“Oh yeah, that makes sense,” the orca nodded, “Well, keep the book. Maybe you'll find something interesting in there. Now, why did you want me to come over? If... you can remember?” Lucky flushed a little and looked around. There was a blue flask at his work station which glowed softly. But there were also three bottles of completed potions set aside. What had he been planning?
“Ha ha, yeah...” He laughed nervously.
A) “I wanted you to watch me test one of these potions!”
B) “I wanted to test one of these potions on you!”
C) “I wanted your help with this new potion I'm making!”
