Random doodlings of Meyou, 30 years after the big A.
Lifespans are so short, very few people alive have ever driven a car...
There's even less cars still working!
Patrol has either been used, evaporated, or gone stale (Unusable)
Forget finding new tires...
So seeing somebody travelling by car is a VERY rare sight indeed. But here he is, making a living as a roaming trader and providing transport in a wood powered 4x4. The Petrol tank will occasionally pay host to actual petrol, or something similar of an alchoholic nature, and uses it sparingly for emergencies only. Meyou will pay handsomely for a set of new tires of the right size, and has been known to make people rich beyond their dreams for a set of mud terrains over the years.

*Nod Nod* Wood Gassifiers can be used to fuel cars with very little modification, and with a simple switching system would be easy enough to flick between petrol and woodgas without any major interruption in power. Unfortunately you lose about a quarter of your engine power when switching to woodgas....but all you need is wood! No petrol!
Its some pretty oldschool tech. It was used a lot during WWII as petrol was scarse....
They even converted some armoured vehicles (And even rumours of Panzers!) to run on it http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/.....55/wq37dl4.jpg
Modifications to the engine aren't needed, however there is quite a bit of kit to carry which makes it somewhat impractical http://www.renewable-energy.ee/blog.....7/untitled.bmp http://www.techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/pix/ggp07/59woodtroop.jpg which is why it might be a bit of a squeeze in my vehicle. But it would be worth it...

Very simple version: When heated in a fire, wood gives off a gas called woodgas. This is usually burnt in the fire itself, but if you can keep it seperate from the fire (Say, heating some wood in a container in a fire) and pipe the gas off, cool it down a bit, you can actually feed it directly into an unmodified engine instead of petrol/gasoline. You lose about 20% of the engines power, and if you set it up wrong you can cause the engine to get clogged up pretty bad, but done right its as good as running on pure petrol, but fuel is everywhere! Unfortunately it is a sizable lump of cargo space you lose, and you need to keep the fire stoked...
Also, you need actual spark plugs in the engine. Diesels can run on it too, but as they lack spark plugs you do need a little bit of diesel mixed in with the woodgas to get the fuel to ignite. This requires significant modification to the engine/fuel lines which can be quite complicated and time consuming to switch back to Diesel only.
Its a bit of a toss up between the versitility of Diesel (Good mileage, use cooking oil, reliability) and being able to run a car off trees...
