I said on Twitter that if Sonic Frontiers won Player's Voice at the game awards I would draw this. It didn't win, but I did it anyway because second place (probably) and sending the desired message to Sega of "more like this please," with the director confirming afterwards that the message was indeed received, is still worth celebrating. Maybe it's not the exact win fans wanted, but there's no reason to let it ruin a year where Sonic as a brand has been getting pretty much nothing but wins. Sonic got the highest-grossing video game movie of all time, taking the crown from itself after setting the record with the first movie, there's a new TV show coming out in a week, another new TV show coming sometime next year set in the movies' continuity, another movie coming the year after that, setting Sonic up to potentially become a pretty successful cinematic universe, as in that thing there's like a million of yet outside of Marvel are almost never successful, and just last month put out a game that, although not perfect and not loved by everyone did sell well enough and was generally well-received by most people who played it, enough to get onto the Player's Voice poll at all despite being such a recent release. If we're being real here, did Sonic really need an award THAT badly from one of the most frankly boring shows I've ever seen in my life? Like really, forget for a second who won what award, forget who you voted for in what category, at the end of the night we ALL lost, because we sat through the fucking Game Awards. I've never watched it before this year, and if this year was any indication of what it's usually like, I am NEVER making that mistake again. I was less bored watching the Superbowl with my dad every year growing up, and unlike video games I don't even like Football! For fuck sake, Animal from the goddamn Muppets was there! The fact that I was bored by something with MUPPETS involved should be considered a violation of my rights! The only interesting thing to happen the whole show was the kid crashing it to give an unscripted award to Bill Clinton at the VERY END. But yeah, maybe Sonic didn't get the W his fans wanted, but a lowercase W is still a W and worth a big-titty bat drawing if nothing else. And sure, maybe if you're not a Sonic fan and were uncomfortably invested in seeing Sonic lose and fans not get what they wanted because you think that the actions of a vocal minority mean that all Sonic fans deserved to be upset, that every single one of us need to be "punished" for our "crimes" you'll say I'm on copium. Personally I say I'm just not a cynical jerk and anyone who can somehow make it seem like a bad thing to turn gators into Gatorade because the specific person they're talking to isn't giving them the Chris Chan meltdown they were hoping for is on copium themselves.
