More fanart of the dragon species from the Babblebrook ASMR series by Youtuber Goodnight Moon. The Columbus Europus, or Cloudjumper. There were a lot of interpretive expansions on this one. Firstly, the tail and wing shape were inspired by the arctic tern, a bird that is agile on the wing, suited for long-distance flights, and also dwells in frigid environments. In the video, Maybelle describes these dragons as having the tendency to mostly fly at extreme elevations, which inspired me to base the design off of the bird. The dense plumage on the underside of the dragon's body, in particular, was added to explain how the dragon would maintain warmth, as well as allow for the legs to tuck up into it for warmth and to increase the aerodynamics of the body. The shorter neck and short horns were incorporated to further attempt to streamline the head and body. Honestly, the four ears were inspired by seeing other four-eared dragon designs, which makes sense to me because the barn owl has its ears arranged asymmetrically on its head. Because sound would hit one ear slightly before the other coming from below or above, this effectively lets them hear in 3 dimensions. I figured that since Maybelle mentioned in the video that for some reason these dragons have predators, they would benefit from having 3-dimensional hearing as well. The external ears being rounded was inspired by the fact that wolves have rounded ears to protect them from frostbite.
The cloud mane was added to explain why the egg had wisps of clouds all over it, and was also inspired by another interpretation by Sara Giralt, which is currently the main fanart incorporated on the wiki. Source: # However, I opted to only include the trailing clouds down the spine, rather than also on the front half of the torso.
Feel pretty good about this one, ngl.
