Considering they drove to quite close to it with clear helmets (likely with implied glare / UV filter) yet nothing happened untill they were "spoken to", I would guess it is the knowledge of what it is / means that causes the madness and change...


One would need to know more about what the black idol is to classify it propperly, and that, I hazard a guess, is in itself, too much a dangerous exposure already.

It seems like, seeing it, knowing it's there, and considering that radiation experiment. It seems to me like it's ALWAYS there, in all of us at all times, the smallest push can tip a person over the edge, including seeing the entity. I have other theories, but this is what i'm most confident of.
