Another festive drawing of some more figures from European folklore - three variations of Krampus from around Europe (Klausen, Buttnmandl and Tyrol) and Wild Barbaras (a figure who shares some traits with Krampus, but instead of monsters specifically made to scare children into behaving, they are manifestations of St. Barbara, whose feast day is on December 4th.)
St Barbaras' father kept her locked away in a tower to ‘preserve her’. When she tried to denounce him and declared her faith, he reacted by having Barbara tortured, and paraded her naked through the streets in an effort to shame her, and then he beheaded his own daughter - but he was soon after struck by lightning and killed. Each year in towns around the Bavarian Alps, young, unmarried girls dress in old-fashioned dresses and aprons outfitted with cowbells. Masks fashioned from natural materials like pine cones and moss are placed on their faces, and they hit men with sticks and give apples and cookies to women and children ). 🎄
