Fossil fuels may be dirty but they are energy efficient. Their high utility makes them a good choice in space actually. It's the burning of large amounts in the atmosphere that is a little problem. It may sound crazy but synthetic fossil fuels might actually be a decent way to store energy in the far future; we never know for sure.
