Well I always loved the idea of runic magic, using runes on items to enchant the item or allowing the caster to utilize it's design so the spell manifests into the spell, whether it be fire balls, teleportation, etc.
But I needed a twist on it to make it my own. So I came up with the idea of runes being etched on the "caster's" very being. So while you can't see any now, in actuality her entire being (deeper than her soul, the thing that ties her to the universe and everything else) is covered in many vibrant blue runes of all sorts of designs. They range from allowing her to view magic sources (such as ley lines in the world) and runes, to mastering fire, to imbuing items with magical properties, etc. etc. Whenever she uses one of these runes they glow brightly and can be visible on her body, unless she uses another to mask their presence (needed in case stealth is required).
The way they activate is she sort of flows the magic around her and in her being through the runes, and their shape dictate what the spell will do. A spell for fire may look similar to a spell for, say, far-sight. But each one is different. Even a minuscule change from one rune to another may drastically affect the outcome of the final spell.
