It was cold by now, but she kept her hands stretched out as far as she could. She was too afraid to take them down now, just because she might miss the chance for someone to see her. She could feel that, any moment now, someone would look down and see her there.
A light turned on behind her, slightly drowning out most of the stars above her. "Honey, what are you doing out here?" Her mother stepped out and sighed, wondering why her little one was outside all alone.
"I'm waiting for Papa," she said, her voice cracking either from lack of use or the tears in her eyes.
"What are you talking about, honey?" Mother asked concernedly. "Your father's inside, waiting for you to come in and say goodnight."
She blinked back tears that stung wildly and held her breath to keep her heart in her chest. "No, he's not," she all but whispered.
The surrogate mother folded her arms with a quiet breath, realizing that her daughter now fully understood who she was to them. "Yes, he is," she attempted once more.
The child did nothing but fight to keep her shivering hands upwards, knowing that if she put them down now, she'd miss her chance. No one would see her. She wanted her real father. The one she knew helped her grow up. The one who always heard her say "look what I did" upon completing the simplest of tasks, and listened with pride. But she knew, deep down in some older part of her, that she had to do this on her own now. One day she would flee from this world that was meant to kill her. She would go home.Just a pic of a small child, waiting for her Papa to find her again. She knows she's not abandoned... That hope is all that's keeping her alive.
That is a system she's staring at, it's just inverted. A cookie to whoever can name a couple of the planets in it. Cookies and an interrogation to whoever can name which exact one she's looking for.
