When he first came to Erlion at the age of 14 (as an accidental traveler and the creator of Erlion himself), he found himself in the residential quarter of Bronirn all alone. He had to grow up as a street kid in the company of the same children. Two years later, on the day when the powers of Azakur's Mark awoke, his friends got scared by him, so they ran away and got caught by slavers.. The fate of the friends is unknown.
A few weeks later, trying to steal a purse from Lirian (Tenkou's former companion) was caught by her. Realizing that Ray was the owner of the Mark, Lirian helped get a job at the Prancing Pony Tavern as a waiter. He worked diligently for several months, but was fired due to a conflict with a visitor (they found out that he was a owner of the Mark). After that, he moved to Trandas and continued his life there, working as a loader at the port.
At the age of 21, he returned to Bronirn, where he first met Tenkou. After an unsuccessful robbery attempt, a few weeks later he was going to return to Trandas with the caravan, but again he came across Tenkou. Having been attacked, he was forced to sign a contract with Tenkou, although he knew about Tenkou's reputation as a Shadow's Killer
