I like how you've told the story from Fred's perspective using even his dialect outside of dialogue. Makes me think of my nutty uncle's entertaining, if insane and at times vulgar, ramblings.

Years and years ago I began interviewing old fencers trying to capture some of the history. I would record them and then transcribe. You quickly learn that people have odd ways of speaking - which makes them very people-ish.

Damn...I'm reading this and listening to Edvard Grieg's piano concerto in A minor. My piano teacher made me learn the first movement of the piano solo version of this even though I was going off to collage in June 1964 before the her students annual recital. I played it for her (by memory) the week before I went off to one of the most stressful, exciting, boring, frustrating and eventful adventures that began my adult life. Which, of course, led to all the mostly ups and a few downs of my career. Yeah, it was a pain in the ass at times, but I wouldn't change a bit of it for all the tea in China. Well, maybe not China but you get the idea.

Great story and a lot of parallels I can relate to.

I did that with pizza once for a party. Everyone knew but... none of us were really prepared for the rest of that day.
