For those that know of the species of the Pr'ryndrai, whether it be by legend or memory, remember that one of their most noteworthy traits was the total devotion between mates for those that would take one. These dragons have intensely powerful souls, and when two dragons of this species nurture a love between each other their souls will themselves become close- close enough that many of them will argue that they merge and become one. Even their minds, already capable of telepathy, connect so profoundly that what was originally limited to speech and very basic emotion now allows almost completely unmitigated communication- rendering enduring pairs able to exchange worlds of information in but a moment.
Such traits enable them to achieve emotional intimacy with an ease that has been known to strike envy in romance-prone members of other races. Yet it has a cost, for if one half of the pair dies the intimacy of their souls is ripped away- leaving a jagged scar that victims would argue never heals. It is a wound that is emotionally, mentally, and some would even report physically torturous. As they do not age and cannot die of old age, their species is also not used to death- only augmenting this pain. It is not uncommon for the remaining dragon in a matehood split by death to mourn for decades or longer.
As such, matehood is sacred to the Pr'ryndrai. Some members of the species resent this, fearing or loathing commitment, but for those that find their counterpart it brings a blissful love as enduring as their lifespans. It is a part of who they are, a hallmark of their species.
It is known among their friends that Vraeryn and Ayahleh are no exception. Together for well over a century at this point, they would tell anyone finding one another was and is a highlight of their lives.

leilryu! I needed more interactions between these two that wasn't, well... anyway so here it is! She did the emotions on their faces wonderfully, I just love how they each seem to be caressing each other so softly!
