I've been to so many places like this. Places where castles or forts once stood and all that's left is some stones that might qualify as a ruin or maybe even just the earthworks, banks, foundation footings, ditches and moats. Some of those sites are over a thousand years old, physical reminders that time is a lot deeper than we realise in our short lives.
Places and scenes like this take me to a strange place, emotionally, because it's so easy to imagine a small stone castle here, keeping the darkness at bay for centuries before electrical power was a thing, and the next nearest settlement was several says away even if you had a horse.
If you imagine yourself sitting inside of such a building, the room lit dimly by fire, looking out of the window and seeing this in the evening, you can understand why the really old fairy tales were so frightening, why people would and still do say in places to not go into the woods at night. And that being scared of the dark was a legitimite and valid fear.
One glance at this and my imagination has gone into complete overdrive.
