All Part of the Show
It was Halloween evening. I was with my little brother at a school costume party, which was hyped up by an event featuring a magician named Ms. Safari, who was supposedly doing stunts with live animals. I wasn’t there willingly. I was instructed to be my brother’s ride home in case our parents got home late, and my brother’s car was in the shop overnight, so I had no choice but to stay where I was and act as a personal chaperone for him until he felt like leaving; mostly standing around awkwardly in silence while he just talked to his friends. I asked him when we could go, but to my frustration, he said he wanted to at least watch the magic show.
The event was held at the local high school, where only high school students like my brother or their parents were gathered. Being 22 and fresh out of college, I felt like I stood out age-wise, especially since I was the only one there without a costume on. Not just the kids, but even their parents, like my little brother (who came as Doctor Strange), were all dressed up. Furthermore, I wasn’t feeling too talkative. I had a bad day and was in a correspondingly bad mood; wishing I was elsewhere instead of at a noisy party where I felt like an outsider. Given the circumstances, I didn’t bother showing up with a costume, nor did I care much for magic tricks, even if they featured live animals. I just wanted to get home as soon as I got the chance.
That chance came 10 minutes before the magic show was to begin (or so I thought). I received a text from my mom saying that she would be able to pick up my little brother. However, having immediately put my phone down, I failed to notice another text from her saying to stay with my brother until she arrived. Believing I could head home, I gave the news to my brother, and he acknowledged this with a subtle nod before resuming his conversation with his friends. I then left towards the exit without a moment’s thought. After passing out the doors, I made for the parking lot across the street where my car was. But as I was making my way, I noticed something. When I arrived here with my brother over an hour ago, there were several parents dropping off their kids or accompanying them inside. Now nobody was here, except for a really tall black-haired lady standing under a bright street lamp who was putting lipstick on. There were a few empty portable bleacher stands off to the side.
The woman looked to be about 6’3”, and was dressed in a bright yellow-colored outdoorsy outfit, the kind of which I couldn’t recognize at the moment. She also carried a white cane. It was definitely an interesting costume.
Not two seconds passed before she took notice of me. At that, I greeted her with a polite grin and nod, then turned back towards my car. Then she said with a giggly voice, “Evening young man! Where are you going? You are about to miss the show! And where is your costume?”
At that, I stopped, looked back at her and shrugged softly; rubbing my hand against the nape of my neck and smiling awkwardly. “Heh. Evening to you too. And I was just here to watch my little bro, but my mom said she’ll pick him up when she gets here. So I’m just heading out. Plus, I don’t really wear Halloween costumes anymore. I usually just spend Halloween as myself if you know what I mean.” I don’t know why I said all this to a total stranger, but I guess I was just itching to head home and thought an elaborate explanation would prevent a long conversation.
I thought wrong…
The woman gazed at me with a raised eyebrow. Then she said bluntly, “I think you are mistaken to leave your sibling unaccompanied until another guardian arrives if you were meant to stay here and ‘watch’ him in the first place. That’s not very responsible is it?”
Those words did make me feel a tad guilty. I clenched my fist in annoyance, then sighed; glancing remorsefully back towards the school entrance. She was right. I shouldn’t have been selfish and tried to leave my brother alone. “Mmm-hmm. Good point,” I said wistfully to the woman. “I guess I can stay with him until the magic show is over.”
Before I could make back for the entrance, the lady gave off a loud giggle that caught me off guard. “That’s the spirit! But I think you mean MY magic show! I can’t just let you go back in without a costume can I? And I find I’m in need of a…shall we say…volunteer for the event that is about to begin.”
Confused at what she meant at first, I simply glanced back at her with a raised eyebrow. “You mean you’re Ms. Safari? The magician for tonight’s show?” I asked her. She nodded matter-of-factly. In hindsight I should’ve deduced that quickly. But I was barely awake enough to put the few pieces together.
It made sense, as her ‘costume’ resembled that of a safari guide. The bright yellow color put me off so much that I hadn’t noticed! That also explained the bleachers reserved for magic show spectators nearby. “And you want me to participate in yourshow? I don’t think I can. I have no experience handling live animals.”
“Oh but that’s the thing,” Ms. Safari said with a raised finger. “You won’t be handling live animals at all. That’s my job! While yours is to improvise. You just have to follow my instructions on stage and if you mess up, it’s all part of the show!”
At that, I put a hand on my elbow and stood timidly, looking off to the side. I had massive stage fright, and there was something about this woman that was so persuasive. Almost like real magic. So at the same time, I felt like I couldn’t say no; or else there'd be some sort of consequence.
Before I could respond, she said to me, “Also, if you participate, I’ll give you a costume that nobody will recognize you in! I meant what I said. I can’t let you back in without a costume! This is a costume party after all! Not to mention it’s main event at that! So, what’s it gonna be?” Then she held out her hand.
I stood there awkwardly for some seconds; not really wanting to go along with this vague proposition. I just wanted to go back to what I was doing before: looking after my brother until the time came to head home. But I didn’t want to leave Ms. Safari hanging. She seemed nice enough to me. Then I shook her hand reluctantly. During our shake, a mischievous look came into her green eyes (which I could’ve sworn were light brown before), and I froze a bit. Then she released my hand and gave a small laugh; proceeding to walk back towards the streetlight and leaving me standing with my arms crossed facing her.
Almost immediately, I felt like I made some sort of mistake. So I asked her cautiously (as I should’ve done before I agreed to do this), “Alrighty then. Soooo, what kind of costume am I wearing? And what’s my role in this show of yours?”
“This show of OURS,” she corrected me again in a sing-song voice; turning back to face me. “And don’t worry, I’ll find something fitting for you.” Then she thoughtfully examined me and held a hand up to her chin . “Let’s see. The show is divided into three acts, so I’ll need three different animals.”
Animals? I thought. Doesn’t she already have animals with her?
Then, to my shock, she pointed the white cane she had been holding at me. “Let’s browse a bit shall we?” Said Ms. Safari in that sing-song voice of hers.
By the time I realized what had happened to me, I heard a loud *poof*, and I was suddenly in that supposed “costume” she was talking about. Except I was not actually wearing a costume, but I WAS the costume. My clothes were completely gone, and I found that I had gained several pounds in weight and inches in height, and was covered in black fur. Losing balance on my feet, I fell to all fours, with my hands in clenched fists on the ground. After recovering from a short blackout, I examined one of my hands and gasped in horror at the sight; making an inhuman “Ah-ah-ah-ah?” noise. What did she do to me!?
Then Ms. Safari said gleefully, “Oh! That’ll do perfectly! Let’s see what else looks good on you!”
Before I could do anything else, I had been *poofed* again. I was still on all fours and felt heavier under my own weight. But now my skin was pink, and when I opened my eyes, a large protruding nose obstructed much of my view.
“Heh! A fat pig like you would definitely make the audience laugh! But let's try something more on the extinct side!” Said Ms. Safari with that same giggle in her voice.
Even by my third transformation, I was only just beginning to suspect what was happening to me. It was all happening so fast! After another *poof*, I was still on all fours and found myself with sharp claws on my ‘feet’ and ‘hands’. My body felt strong and lean, and I was larger than I was as a human. But it was of no reassurance to me. I opened my mouth to question Ms. Safari in protest as to what she was doing, but only a “Rawwwr?!” came out. I scared myself with the noise, looking around frantically for an unseen predator before realizing the noise came from me; an even worse revelation.
I grit my teeth in shock, and felt them with my tongue; unfamiliar with the sharpness of them. I also had two abnormally large fangs on both sides of my upper jaw that always stuck out.
But before I knew I was a Sabertooth Tiger, Ms. Safari said with a disappointed expression, “A real shame. Now that I think of it, that would scare the kids. Let’s try something else.”
Another *poof*, and I was standing on two legs again. This being my fourth transformation, I quickly regained my bearings and discovered that I was now some sort of bird (judging by my short and stubby legs with clawed talons). I gazed up with a half-worried, half-annoyed expression at the magician, who towered over me: now a Dodo bird with a long beak and folded flightless wings. I didn’t know that of course. But I knew that whatever I was, I looked ridiculous. I tried repeat my protest, but instead of a ‘why?’, all that came out of me was “squawk…?”
“Wonderful!” Said Ms. Safari delightedly. “A Dodo bird will cover my lost species act wonderfully! Now I just need one more animal…” She said with an ominous but joyful glare at me.
I backed away from her at the idea of transforming again, squawking in terror. Even if I got away, I probably would have been stuck a Dodo bird forever. But I just wanted to get out of there!
However, I was too late. And I heard the *poof* once more. I felt like I was on all fours again. And my eyes were squeezed shut. When I opened them again hesitantly after some seconds, I found myself (or my head at least) at eye level with the top of the streetlight. It was only after looking down that I spotted Ms. Safari, who just seconds ago towered over me. Even for someone her height, I must have been twice as tall as her! At least 13 feet!
“You make a good-looking elephant sir!” She said with satisfaction whilst examining my new trunk with interest.
At this, I examined my reflection in a nearby classroom window with disbelief. I was indeed a tuskless elephant, but I preferred my human look by far! I saw a large gray creature in the window with a trunk and a worried expression on his face. It appeared that even as all these creatures, I still kept my eyes, my eyebrows, my freckles, and even my hair! I also saw the same tired lines under my eyes as before (symptoms of my prior boredom at having to be at this party). But everything else was changed. And to my embarrassment, I was completely naked. Only my glasses remained on, and their size kept changing to fit my new form.
While I gaped at my reflection with an open mouth and a raised trunk, Ms. Safari continued. “I’d say you are now all dressed up and ready to assist me in my show! This way you’ll be able to continue watching your brother until the show ends, and now he’ll watch you too as you perform all kinds of tricks and stunts for him! Let this be a lesson to you! Don’t run from your responsibilities!”
At that, I turned and gave the magician a longing look. I tried to say, “I’m sorry! Please! Change me back! I can’t stay like this!” But only trumpeting noises came out.
“Now now,” she said, waving a finger high in my face with a blissful expression. “Since you agreed willingly to participate in the show, I will only have you perform three acts instead of the six I originally planned if you refused. And if your performance is satisfactory, I will change you back! With all your clothes of course. Like I said! Your job is to improvise, and if you mess up, it’s all part of the show!”
I grunted in annoyance. I didn’t want to BE the live animal! But before I could try to say more, kids and their parents began to flood out the doors, and they gasped in amazement upon seeing me. Before I could get away (whatever good that would have done for me being impossible for anyone to not notice), Ms. Safari had a megaphone in her hand, announcing; “Alright boys and girls! Please find your seats!”
I froze in place as everyone flooded out of the school doors and slowly made their way to their seats on the bleachers; all eyes wide and firmly focused on me. I heard several gasps and heard countless voices begin to gossip at the sight of an uncaged, tamed elephant with hair and glasses. While I understood the attention, I hated it. Words could not describe how much I wished I either kept walking to my car or stayed put with my little brother inside. Anything to avoid this! I suddenly felt bad for all the animals I stared at when I went on a trip to the zoo.
Once all the students and their parents were seated (albeit after several pictures were taken), Ms. Safari raised her megaphone to her red lips again. “Now for our first act! I found a few specimens for today's show; the first of which is this guy right here!” She waved a hand at me, and several students cheered, including my little brother. I had just noticed him in the second row from the front. When our eyes met, he suddenly stopped cheering and looked hard at me, as if I was vaguely familiar to him (likely thanks to my remaining facial features).
Then I quickly looked away. I didn’t want him to recognize me at all. Even if it was unlikely he would ever suspect I had turned into an Elephant, I wanted to get this over with and put this embarrassing matter behind me for good. That was motivation enough for me to cooperate with Ms. Safari’s shenanigans, and pretend like I was indeed nothing more than a normal animal performer.
Behind me, Ms. Safari conjured a large rubber ball from her parked van and lay it down beside me. “Now, Simon here is going to try to balance on the ball!”
I cringed; hating both the proposed circus act and the fake name Ms. Safari gave me. I looked once more at my brother, who was back to cheering delightfully at the show I was about to put on. Then I looked back hesitantly at Ms. Safari, who grinned expectantly at me and motioned her head towards the ball.
I then sighed and clinched my eyes shut, thinking to myself, “If you mess up, it’s all a part of the show.”
Then I opened my eyes and began to climb the ball…
That’s all folks! :)
