I always liked that P-47M's made plenty of jet kills - diving on Me-262s and shooting them down. Those big superchargers made the thunderbolt the king at high altitudes. Durability, armor, lots of .50s and a very quick roll rate allowed it to quickly reverse turns. Useful when those lighter-wing loaded Axis types can pull a tighter turn, but can't unload fast enough and prevent an overshoot. And when that didn't work, being able to run quickly for home helped. I think that a big success factor for the durable Republic and Grumman aircraft, was that it allowed rookie pilots to go out, maybe make a mistake or two, but manage to survive and return from the mission all the smarter. At the end of the day, experienced pilots tend to be a more important factor than "aircraft A. is better than Aircraft B."
