Matt is a Mightyena that used to study Pokemon, usually just passive abilities. One day he found that he had a Trace ability, and took a few years to study this ability, even with other Pokemon. He also learned to control it along the way, keeping himself fat for personal reasons, ending up enjoying it too.

He found a lovely Mightyena one day, and he sort of gave up on researching Pokemon, taking up fighting instead with his girl, Jade. the two of them have been together ever since, loving every minute of the other's company.
