Back in late 90's/early 2000s, I had an Imperial Guard armored company. This was back in the era when any weapon with a strength of 5 or better could potentially blow up a tank with one shot. I only ever used the army ONCE, and then sold it in 2004 or so.
Aaaaaaaanyway, I kind of want a new armored company, but I really don't want to paint more Leman Russ tanks. So... Chaos Marine Armored Company. I've got 2 Predator Destructors, 1 Predator Annihilator, and 2 old Rhinos, one of which I just converted (back, ironically) into a Vindicator (see below). Much tank-ness. Many booms. Very Space Marine.
This was interesting. I picked up this old 3rd edition Rhino from ebay for about $10. It had sandpaper-coated cardboard stuck on the top, and bases glued to cover the hatches in the sides... but when I took those off and started putting the metal Vindicator parts (ebay, about $20) on, I discovered that this Rhino had, in fact, once been a Vindicator before!
Those two green pieces on the desktop? Those were glued to the front of the tank (where the gun-mount is now), but they're damaged, metal side-armor Vindicator panels. That blue panel on the desktop? That is the rear hatch, but it turns out the Rhino already HAD one of those metal rear hatches on it! So I just left that one on, and I'll keep the blue one as a spare. Most of the plating and parts went on easily. A little too easily. When I put the side-armor panels onto the Rhino, there were glue-grooves on the hull that fit the panels PERFECTLY, which implies that such panels had once been glued to this tank before! I'm not so much converting a Rhino into a Vindicator, so much as I was restoring someone's Rhino botch-job into a Vindicator once again!
Now I just need to see if I have a spare Leman Russ dozer blade in my bitz bins so I can convert it into a siege-dozer for this tank. Well, and find a hatch-ring for the hatch on top (the space marine commander isn't mounted in, as the mounting piece between him and the tank is missing).
