“Good afternoon Mr and Mrs Johnson, how are you two today”
“We’re doing great” Sheryl replied with a happy tone, her left hand was gently squeezing her husband Kevin’s hand nervously.
“That’s good and how’s the little one?” the Doctor asked.
“Kile is doing good, he helped his father make pancakes this morning”
The doctor chuckled “He’s a good kid”
Doctor Barker made his way over to a filing cabinet located in the corner of the room, he opened the middle drawer and looked through some files, after a few seconds he found the one he was looking for, inside the file we’re a few papers with test results and health information.
“I have the test results from your previous appointment, it looks like you are ninety nine percent healthy”
Sheryl sighed in relief “Oh thank goodness”
The doctor stared at the floor for a moment “…but…”
Sheryl looked at him nervously “What is it?”
“There’s the one percent, even though you are perfectly healthy there’s…there is a slight problem”
“What is it?” Sheryl asked
“When Kile was born…it seems that…the birthing process did some damage to your internal systems, it’s nothing extreme but if it we’re to happen again it may cause even more damage” the doctor rubbed the back of his neck nervously, he hated giving out bad news, but he would rather be honest then lie “We have determined that there is a fifty percent chance of you surviving another birth and…” the doctor sighed before wiping away a tear that began to form in his eye “There’s a fifty percent chance of you not making it”
Sheryl lowered her ears, her relaxed calm expression turned into fear “What…w~what are you saying?”
“You may not survive another birth, it may cause too much stress on your body” doctor Barker gently placed his hand on Sheryl’s shoulder “You may survive it, but the chances are mixed, i think the best option would be to adopt, it’s much safer that way”
Sheryl began crying, it felt like her world was crumbling around her, she wanted another kid, she wanted to give her son a little brother or sister, but the chances of that happening weren’t in her favour.
“It’s ok honey it’s ok” Kevin wrapped his arms around her and tried his best to comfort her.
“I’ll… I’ll give you some space, whenever your ready your free to go home” the doctor made his way to the door, before he left he looked back and tried his best not to cry.
She cried into her hands, her husband was able to soothe the pain but not make it go away, nothing ever would, and that was something she had to live with.
“Honey…I think the best option is to~” before he could finish his wife quickly interrupted him, her voice sounded more calmer but a bit shaken up.
“I’m going to adopt…it’s too much of a risk…I would rather Kile had a step brother then loose a parent, and i don’t want you to be a single parent”
Kevin placed his hand on her cheek and looked into her eyes “I’m.. so happy you decided that, because I don’t know what I would do without you”
They both wrapped their arm’s around each other and hugged each other as tight as they could, they began to lose track of time and after seven minutes they finally let each other go.
“We should probably get back to Kile, i..I really want to see him right now”
They both stood up and exited the room, Sheryl wiped away her tears and tried her best to make herself look happy, but sadly it didn’t work, once they entered the waiting room Kile came running towards them.
“Mommy, mommy, i just furnished watching this episode of Street Sharks, there’s this part where~” Kile paused immediately after seeing the sad look on his mothers face. “W~What’s wrong mommy?”
Sheryl kneeled down so she was eye level with her son “It’s nothing sweetheart, c~can i have a hug?”
“Of course mommy” Kile happily hugged his mother, he was worried, his mother had always looked happy after leaving her appointments, what made this one different?
They hugged for a few seconds, once the hug had ended Sheryl spoke “Let’s go get some pizza, i’m starving”
“Ok mommy, i love you”
She smiled and pet her son’s head “I love you too sweetheart”
