Shadowy Serpents Slithering Silently
jelethorim asked for a very interesting commission. I was really digging this pic, from beginning to end.The idea here was that he's in the duct work of a spaceship looking through some things for all kinds of spy-like purposes, and halfway through sketching I was thinking that he should above a hallway, above the lighting fixtures hiding in the darkness above it.
Can you imagine looking up to see those scales flopped around and above the lighting above you and slowly moving with stealthy efficiency? And a hand.
Got to use a few methods I've been wanting to try. A few problems with lighting here and there, I'm sure you can see them, and a horrible "character stands out too much from the background" look as well. Can't stand that. I'll need to keep an eye out for preventing that next time. But I think I'm slowly moving to where I want/need to be.

Epic looking. I mean it... I can see why you liked doing this one so much! As for the 'flaws' I honestly don't see them. The character doesn't seem to stand out too much, and well, unusual lighting is difficult, but I See nothing that sparks a 'hey, that's not right' reaction in me.
I'm going to call it like I see it, as Awesome.

Super superb snake scene! :D
Not to nitpick over-much, but if you want a truly alliterative title, you can't use SSS sounds and SHH sounds together like "Shadowy" and "Serpents", since it's all about matching the sounds at the beginning of the word. Maybe replace it with 'Stealthy'? Just a suggestion from a snake AND alliteration enthusiast. :>

It depends. Usually I get the basic shadows down of the character before I start in with background and provide light sources, then I move back and forth to make sure it somewhat matches up.
I assembled a bit of a "how to" on how i did this, if that gives and idea of my approach...

I've heard the same thing, but usually I do a better job at matching the background up. This time I just flubbed. It could be that this is all just a new method, and the background approach hasn't changed. Regardless, the problem looks like I either didn't make the background light enough, or didn't add enough darkness to the characters head region and his left arm. Those seem like the most problem spots.
