Cities endure and become centers for the advancement of civilization. Isolated towns and villages get burned down and their inhabitants massacred in wartime while spending their peacetime violently enforcing regressive conformity on their citizens. People living alone in the wilds die lonely and afraid, usually of something stupid and otherwise preventable.
That's what history -actual history, not loner hardman Discovery Channel homesteader nonsense- has taught us.
And yes, cities commonly have their issues - that are no worse than the issues faced by smaller communities. The difference is that everyone hears about what's going in the cities because that's where all the attention gets focused. No one hears about the people that get quietly stomped on generation after generation in Bumfuckington, Nowhere and its thousand thousand little counterparts spread all over.

I've lived rural and subrural most of my life. There's something to be said for the reliability of being closer in to civilization. Without it, you're left to fend for yourself, requiring more skills, and more expensive tools.. to get what you need.
Not to mention the internet................

Growing up on a farm (and having no wish to be a farmer myself), I tend to agree.
That siad, still very much a country person who doesn't like people.
So I look for a place just on the edge of a small-medium town.
Of course, having grown up on a farm... my definition of base comforts seem to be lower than others...

Having spent a good chunk of my life in a rural area, I agree with KaiserDunk's and Foxobox' comments: You do indeed have to plan trips and combine errands to save on time and fuel. You do have to fend for yourself where possible. And Internet access can be iffy. I spent 10 years on dialup before I moved out.
