Taurtoise warriors are, as you may guess, not especially masters in the blitzkrieg-type of war. On the other hand, they are extremely resistant to most conventional weapons, and once a group of them decided to march on, they are like lava: slow, but unstoppable. Inevitable, as would Thanos say.
It all came from that Taur/Tor-toise pun I had in mind some time ago. Then I realized that there was no tortoise taurs to my knowledge - in fact, outside the mammal genre, there is almost no taur depiction at all (taurs are not my thing though so I can't really speak objectively about the subject)...
I am extremely proud of that pic because if I had a look at some tortoises prior to beginning this pic, it is entirely based on my memories of that creature, no reference has been used during the whole process.And I believe the result is quite convincing...

Well, the character here has an anthro upper half with limbs, but even if it lacked limbs I would qualify it as a taur.
According to the wiktionary:
"Taur (plural taurs) (furry fandom) An anthropomorphic character, often a furry, with a human-like upper body and four-legged lower body, similar to a centaur."

Very good shell detail. The beak and rough skin does look turtle-ish. That would be an imposing sight on the battlefield. I think a little flexible shell extension to the neck of the shell might be a good addition. It could give a little extra room for the body to slide into for protection.
For a centaur, that would not be a consideration. A horse only retracts its genitals into its body. For a turtle or tortoise, they retract their head(their main head not their "little head" : ) as well as arms and legs. Having an extension of the shell for the human portion would make sense. A turtle's shell is part of its body and even has nerves. They can feel things touching it. A tauroise might even wear armor over its shell.
These are objectively accurate questions, some of which I asked myself already, but I don't have yet all the answers! ^^''' Let's try to see what we can do with that...
* Yes, there is no reason there won't be any females, but I yet don't know if they look different or not depending on how tortoise-ish they are...
* My original idea is that they can fully back into their shell, buuuut it's quite a lot of meat to pack inside... Plus your question just made me realize that tortoises that do that protect their heid with their legs that close the open gap, they can do that because the gap between the lower and upper shell is almost continuously wide from one front leg to the other, but the way I drew this creature, it can not do such a thing! So in the end, they logically aren't able to.
* I suppose they are still vegetarians - at least they were in my mind since I had this galapagos tortoise in mind when creating that organism, but it wouldn't srprise me they would have evolved to be at least partly carnivore - just look at the snapping turtle...
* I... just don't know

Living tanks, that is exactly the point - but those from WWI where speed is involved! X-D
I had Zulu warriors in mind while building up this creature, which explains the lack of further protection apart from a narrow shield (which, if you noticed, got quite a low handle, for the good reason that there is more to protect upward than downward!)~
