Back in the UK after
Hamakei and I went to Puerto Rico to visit my brother and check on my mother's condition. She is in a nursing home, been taken care of, even as her condition continues to ravage her. Alzheimer's has taken its toll -- she can't move nor talk, and barely reacts to the world around her. She, however, appeared to have recognized me, and smiled a bit.
While in Puerto Rico, I took Hamakei to see the Porta Coeli, as well as a few places in Old San Juan, and (what's left of) the observatory in Arecibo. Apparently there have been proposals to rebuild the site, but no decision has or will be made any time soon.

Watching the ending now.. It's a very strange feeling watching it get destroyed....
But one thing that movie "taught" me was wrong. I was led to believe the reflector was a continuous piece of concrete. It's not. It's thousands and thousands of aluminium panels held about 15ft off the ground on individual poles...

As a Puerto Rican myself. I saw the video of it collapsing. This kinda saddens me how the observatory is right now that it seems broken beyond repair. It was like a part of a non-official historical landmark in Puerto Rico.
And about your mother, hope she lives peacefully till the end of her time. My grandma suffered the same fate, her mind and emotions were getting unstable over time until she suffered enough and the Alzheimer's disease got to her. It was a tragic day for all of us, esp. my mom of my grandma's (my mom's mom) official death.
Now that grandma rests peacefully, she's not suffering her tragedy anymore.

Or that it was left to decay and didn't receive the maintenance it had been needing for years.
My worry is that with the rise of distributed detection like the James Webb telescope, the desirability of a single large dish will be much reduced and they will decide it's not economically viable to replace.
After all, if you can spread the workload around the world, other countries have to bear much of the cost rather than paying for it all yourself

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's condition. Alzheimer's is such a terrible disease.
Regarding the Arecibo observatory, it's so sad to see it like that. I've seen the video of the collapse a while ago, and it's just tragic. I remember seeing it for the first time in the Goldeneye game and movie, and at the time, I didn't even know that it was a real thing, only finding out years later what it was. I'd like to see it rebuilt, but that's probably not going to happen.
