Temple States funerals are about celebrating the deceased's accomplishments. By doing this, you give strength to their soul in the afterlife.
It's also important to commit the deceased's accomplishments to memory. That way, future generations can benefit from their wisdom and have a better shot at ascending themselves.
The mood is very positive, with a little formality to it, like you're at an awards ceremony.
Family Culture funerals are about cutting ties and giving thanks.
You need to free the deceased's spiritual energy so it can return to the Family. You do this by saying your goodbyes (severing social ties) and burning the body (severing physical ties). This part is very solemn.
Then, when the spirit is free + its energy has returned to the Family, you give thanks. You celebrate their positive impact on the world, and their gift of energy that will grow the Family stronger. This part is joyful and often comes in the form of a party.
Duhr funerals are similar to Family Culture funerals in form and function.
You symbolically settle debts, dissolving the deceased's personhood so their spirit can be free.
Unlike in Family Culture, the body isn't burned, but rather given as a gift to gods the deceased may have owed (or just had a particularly strong relationship with).
When this process is done, it's time to celebrate their life... but in a smaller, more intimate way than Family culture: think a small group of loved ones gathering in private, to laugh + cry and remember.

Lizards' channeling system (the organs that allow them to process flux, or "magic", in this setting) has different biology compared to the rest of their bodies. It looks a little bit like a plant: black tendrils worming their way between muscle groups and organs.
The channeling system is... stubborn. It doesn't want to die with the rest of the lizard, forming itself into a delicate black plant that will erupt from the deceased's body. Normally, this plant dies and begins to rot only a few weeks later. But The Temple States, through a special embalming process, have figured out how to get these black plants to live for much longer, and use them as a way to memorialize their dead.
