The last gleam of sunlight spilled out into the grove as the sun began to drop below the mountains in the distance. The crystal clear lake was painted red, orange and pink from those last magical moments before darkness and the accompanying peaceful quiet descended on the valley. Fiadh looked up from her cushion to look at those snow capped peaks, bathed in beautiful pink light. She readjusted herself and turned her attention back down to the grove. She sat on a stone longue adorned with soft, blue pillows and cushions. Columns flanked either side of the patio, beautiful and colorful flowers growing to both sides of the cobble walkway that lead back out into the forest.
Behind her stood a moderate sized, stepped pyramid. The stones were painted with purples and gold accents, various celestial symbols glowing ever so slightly as the sunlight gave way to the brilliant light of the full moon. Banners and tapestries hung on the columns and along the walls of the pyramid with more of the same celestial symbols, depicting the various phases of the moon. A dull murmur filled the grove and the handful of various aristocrats and nobles milled out in their fine satin and silk garments. Some of them would politely bow as they passed by Fiadh on their way out of the grove back to their settlement below in the valley to sleep and dream peacefully.
Most had already departed earlier, only a small number had remained into the fading evening hours. There were very few days when Fiadh did not have company in her secluded grove. At first she had been wary of the humans, more and more had made the journey after that first woman all those years ago. They were tired, weary and afraid, but they had come all the same. They were not tired, weary or afraid anymore. She had done her best to bring them peace. Now they were dressed in fine clothes and brought with them gifts of silk, jewels, gold and silver. This custom had confused Fiadh, but she had forgotten that confusion long ago, even if she still did not understand. Eventually men came, bringing stone and tools with them. She had fled for a time while the men built that strange monument. But that was years ago, and now it was just another part of her home, just like the waterfalls and the gently flowing stream.
There were other pyramids throughout the valley, she had seen them, scattered across the far reaches and into the mountains in the distance, six more in total, one for each of her kin. She had watched them be constructed over the years, slowly taking shape over the course of decades in some cases. Fields of wheat had sprung up during that time, and more and more buildings appeared, growing larger and more grand as the years ticked by slowly. She felt a kindship with these people, they were creatures of her forest like any other, and it made her smile to see them well.
I think I’ll end up doing four of these for now, so here is part 2. I’m not sure how much time exactly has elapsed, but this represents the period at which Fiadh and that civilization (which still needs a name ughhh) was at the height of their power and opulence. Originally I had the idea that during this period Fiadh took on a more dragon like appearance. I’m not sure if I still think that is the case, but this was a fun little commission to explore what that might have looked like!
