Just to clarify:
A SoulKeeper is a direct link to spirits. Where the Spirit looking over the land gives life, the Keeper maintains the right to life. If the Spirit leaves the land no pups will be born, no flowers will re grow. But if the Keeper leaves and the Spirit stays pups will still be born but everything will begin to die.

If both leave the entire land will begin to die. But this doesn't come without a punishment to the Keeper. Everything that dies causes terrible pain to the Keeper but since they are Immortal beings till they are 100 they will not die. They could be crushed and be in Un-Godly pain but they will live.

When a Keeper leaves there land they are incredibly bad luck.

Hope that clears up what position they play. There is more but I'm not ruining the story xD
