[COMM] Every Handy Harbinger's Secret Weapon - by Jarethn...
Not many people are aware of how big Harbingers can actually get until they see them for themselves.
This captain found out the hard way when their cargo ship had a hull breach just off the coast of a major port city during a major storm. It was quite a hit that would have had the vessel underwater within a few short hours. To their surprise, and perhaps in a cruel twist of fate, the two Harbingers trained in such operations happened to be in the same area, and were geared up and on-site in just fifteen minutes. One of the largest cargo ships in the world was just a model compared to the likes of Sylvie and Lydia.
This kind of thing happened more often than the two Harbingers cared to count. Regardless, their mission was always the same. Sylvie kept the boat steady in the turbulent waters while the crew were relocated to a more stable part of the ship. Then, she slowly lifted the entire ship clear out of the waters, clearly showing where the breach was for Lydia to take care of.
"Looks like a buoy hit it hard," Lydia commented. "Nothing we can't fix, though."
"Not at all," Sylvie smiled. "Care to help me take it to de dry dock?"
"No need, got my secret weapon right here, chica," Lydia grinned with a wink, pulling a roll of tape from her belt and unwinding a strip a few hundred feet in length.
"I didn't know dey made duct tape in dat size!"
"Not duct tape, that won't stick to wet surfaces. This stuff's fresh from the lab, supposed to stick on and stay in place even when fully submerged. Best of all, it can be peeled off at a dry dock and shredded for recycling. Buuuuuuuut, if you wanna call it 'duct tape', I'm not gonna stop ya."
"Dat'll be very useful. Now hurry up, dis ding ain't dat light."
Back in the olden days, looking up to Harbingers as gods and goddesses was a very literal affair. Most of the time, however, they remained at 'relatively' small sizes, usually around a few dozen meters, and don't often reach modern skyscraper scales unless it was a serious event. Usually something that threatened an entire civilization. Yet, the ones they were obligated to protect had soon developed a way to reach those scales themselves, if only in the things they made. Thus, it became more common for Harbingers to be seen closer to their maximum sizes. Of the six American Harbingers, Sylvie and Lydia are most likely to be seen that way, with this being a prime example of why. Modern ships are able to reach several hundreds of feet in length, meaning a Harbinger even at their 'medium' sizes would still be dwarfed. Even then, a patch job would be a two-person job, especially if they wanted to keep the crew on-board.
Also at such sizes, their equipment would be far different from a normal coast guard or emergency response vessel. Hence why they have whole lifeboats and first aid crates rather than PFDs or individual kits. Hell, they could probably carry a whole hospital with them if they wanted to, but even with the US's legendary military budget even that was going to be a bit of a stretch. They're trained well enough on their own, thankfully.
Once again,
jarethnerl absolutely nailed the spirit of the Harbingers by having the two aquatic girls show how even a Harbinger's upper-scale sizes could prove to be beneficial, especially in modern times. There's just something about holding a large tanker or container ship like a big Lego model that's just so awe-inspiring. Fortunately for the ship's crew, they're here to help. ^,..,^
