I went there in a few months ago, actually. Not too much to see- some smoldering earth and a disused 4 lane highway plastered with graffiti. You wouldn't even know it was once a town if you drove by, because literally everything is gone. But even though my hopes of awesome photo opportunities were dashed, it still has an interesting history.
All of the above really depends on the location you're visiting, and they constantly change from week to week.
For example, this hospital is easy to just walk to, with tons of buildings to explore. There's always a possibility that a group of vandals or scrappers will be caught or a building will be burned, and then security would pick up and it would be too risky to bother going there for a while. So you have to know what you're doing.
General rule of thumb for exploration is to never break and enter, but to use entrances others before you have created (which change as windows and doors are boarded up).
I've been approached by security 3 times. It always helps to be cool and cooperative with the authorities

It is a lot of fun! You just have to go prepared.
Sadly not all security is going to be nice, and some authorities are out there to press charges no matter what your intent for being there. I know of a few situations in the last few months that resulted in photographers being fined upwards of $800 and even charged for burglary.
Risk is comes with the territory, though. I've gotten pretty lucky in a few dicey situations.

The reply I usually get about my photography work, after "how do you find these places?" is "damn, that looks like (insert video game or movie title)." But I can see why. We usually only see these places depicted in the context of horror or fiction.
I find abandonment to be beautiful, peaceful, and even in some cases even relaxing. Climbing into an old power plant alone and just taking in the ambiance- there's nothing like it.

I have a micro 4/3 camera at the moment. The format has pretty much all the great things about an SLR without the usual bulk. I find it to be a great choice for exploring.
I use the GF1, 20mm f1.7, 9-18mm wide angle, 14-45mm and sometimes the Minolta 58mm f1.4. That all goes in my small Crumpler bag with the tripod on the side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/311176.....n/photostream/

This is an absolutely stunning piece~ I love how there is that split divide that has the option of two paths, in the midst of it is a old wheel chair that creates tension. You did a fantastic job only hinting and cropping a certain amount that leads off in both direction that leads the audience curious. I love the how the lighting just frames it, the triangles of light and dark all work well. This picture invokes a powerful emotion. Greaaat stuff man.
Henryton is cool. However, I've visited times than I can count and I've photographed it in every way possible.
Now that I've been to much more intact and untouched locations (without so much graffiti and vandalism), Henryton just isn't all that fun to explore.
I still go occasionally since I live about 5 minutes away, and it's easy to access ;)

There are cool abandonments to explore in Maryland, but the best ones are getting increasingly harder to get into because of security. Most urban explorers keep locations to themselves or within their groups, and for good reason- once made public, abandoned buildings become heavily vandalized and scrapped. For that reason, I don't share locations or info on many spots. Henryton is a good example of the very worst that can happen.
Maybe we could explore sometime if you are really into it. There are a few spots I wouldn't mind revisiting.

That would be awesome. I completely understand where you're coming from there. I'd like to call myself extremely respectful of places like those. I spend a lot of time in the forest near my house. I was also a boy scout for a few years. Even at Henryton, me and the two others I went with were very careful not to leave a trace of our presence. We never broke anything and doors that were shut were left that way.
I'd love to check out some of those other places with you though, perhaps we can talk further via email or instant messenger?
Just send me a note if you want to exchange contact information.
