It makes sense really. The problem is that there is really no way to define reptile that doesn't also include birds. So you need to either count birds as reptiles, which no-one wants to do, or else get rid of reptiles entirely. The old classifications were often based on 'things that look alike' and don't account for convergent evolution or wild divergence.
The same thing happened with fish. All those nice land mammals and reptiles are actually more closely related to bony fish than either group is to sharks and rays - so there's no way to define 'fish' that includes sharks and trout, but doesn't also include humans and lizards. Only one solution: Goodbye, fish.
