With the upcoming Mario movie I've been playing around with a Mario-themed character for a tabletop RPG in case I can convince my GM to run it.

The Koopa called Spade hails from the Dark Lands, a truly harsh and unforgiving place to be a farmer. With Bowser's ongoing war eating up all available resources for his war machine, it is the farmers who suffer greatly from the diminishing returns.
Watching his family work their claws to the bone for little more than the ego of an oppressive leader, Spade finally had enough. Risking arrest and punishment from the authorities, he snuck into the Mushroom Kingdom where he begged the Princess for his family to be allowed to immigrate and start a farm there. He had little more to offer Princess Peach other than his personal service in the toad army where someone as strong and heavily armored as a Koopa would no doubt be very useful.
Peach had already decided that she could not turn away an honest soul and planned on allowing him to become a citizen but seeing his dedication to hearth and home, accepted his offer. Once his mom, dad, brothers and sisters had been smuggled out of the Dark Lands and set up in a homestead, Spade was officially signed up as a fresh soldier in the Toad Army, brandishing his signature weapon, the 'Dark-Lands Spade', in the name of the crown.

Additional Character Notes:
Spade wears a bandanna similar to the Toads' signature caps to show solidarity with them.
The Dark-Lands Spade he wields is very tough, sharp, and can be used like a two-handed axe if pressed. It is made to penetrate the hard rocky soil of his birthlands and can be likened to an entrenching tool.
You might be asking if Spade is a nickname and no, it is his everyday birth name. He was just born to a pair of very rural, illiterate and unimaginative parents who named them after a tool in the shed.
Still... Could have been worse.
His sister is named Dirty Hoe.
