After graduating of Bayville high school, Kitty decided to return to her old high school to find out what happened to her former classmates after she was recruited by professor Xavier and Jean Grey who discovered her mutant powers in episode 2 X-Pulse. What she didn't know was that Riley and Kate who used to bully her as a student never forgot her and ever since they found out on the news that she is a mutant in episode 31 Day of recovery, they have been dreading the fact that Kitty will come back for revenge and make them pay for all the bad pranks they pulled on her.
During Kate's internship with an assistant to Bolivar Trask who had continued his crusade against mutants, she stole an electronic inhibitor necklace that could make a mutant as weak as a human and after talking to Riley about it, they waited to test it on their former scapegoat when she came back to say hello to her old acquaintances and teachers on graduation day.
They set a trap for Kitty in the girls' bathroom by knocking her out before she had time to apply her ninja reflexes and be able to use her intangibility, she was then securely bound/gagged and hung inches off the floor in the hallway where Riley and Kate locked Kitty in her locker.
