He had been decapitated by a rather explosivly bad summoning ritual, it most likely wasn't meant for him...left those who were trying to do the summoning most likely with no further interest in arcane magics (ie: those crazy teen kids looking for adventure!).
I'd guess he managed to survive only because he could sort of change shape to a degree, like how he now can create his little limbs he moves on, or grow membranes on them to glide, or retract them for being snakelike entirely. He's certainly far from a super powerful demon, since demons all lie about their strengths, infallibility, and obvious modesty.
Becoming little more then a head has him...well...learning life isn't revolving around him. Much like a teenager, only much worse because demons tend to be jerks. Molior is a 'regular' human who got turned blue by Pallor & Pavor after they teased him incessantly, and that is when he became the polite, gentle and kind soul that he is. After P&P, you either go nuts from it, or realize it's just all on yourself.
His three arms are a result of birth defect, giving him the longer torso, and making him often have to move around like a primate. The reversed eye colors are from a pottery wheel incident.
That's roughly them in a nutshell...Molior takes vour 'home' and Vour learns about the world from the peaceful ol' molior's perspective...which in itself can be very strange in it's own charming way. (INCIDENT WITH DR FROND ONCE....do ho ho.)
