Eric used to be a police ofshorts in his sector, his modification has been dubed "Enforcer" as it's cummonly used by seceruty units.
He quits his job after a while because of personal reason and became a mercenary guard.
In one of his escort mision, the group that he was escorting kidnap him and bring him to an unknown facility. The group turns out to be a criminal organization dealing in ilegal tech and experiments, and Eric is their next test subject.
He was gonna be a test subject for a machine that shots out electricity at a certain frequency to agitate the nanites in Synths body to turn them aggresive. But all it did to him is shut him down, the machine deem failure got rework and Eric got dumped into a junk planet to hide his body.
A few days after that he rebooted himself, he don't remember anything after being shot with that machine but for some reason he is very very hungry and the rusted metal around him is looking delicious. Out of instinc he grab a pice of railroad trac and swalow it whole, for some reason it taste delicious and then he swalow a I beam, a rusty gun, some rebars, a pice of satelite, and any thing that whitin his reach. After his little buffet his stomatch is filled with tons of scrap that it's as talk as him maybe abit more, feeling tired he soon take a quick nap.
When he woke up everything around him have chaged all the scrap around him seems to have shrunk but uppon clocer inspection he is the one that have grown. He concluded that the scrap that he ate has been added to his body increasing his overal size. Synth typicaly can eat non organic material like silicon, but they defenetly can't absorb heavy metals. It seems the machine did actualy did work but it not as intended, it actualy agitate the nanites regeneration to keep repairing him despite being perfectly fine, it confused the nanites to absorb anything that enters his mouth and just aded the excess to his overal size. When he want to shrink down he can eject the pure metal that he ate or the entire living object.
After shrinking back down he manages to catch up a passing scavanger ship and join the crew. Later on he became the 'scraper' of the crew due to his new ability to seperate metal making the price mutch higher, he left the crew after a year and going back to his mercenary job.
The first thing he did is hunt down his kidnaper after gathering intel on them during his time as a scraper. When he arive there he started to ate every guards and object he can find, their weapons heve no effect on him because he once absorbed a hull armor of a advaced warship and keep it as his exterior body making him imune to almost all small weapons. After he got big enough he literaly lift up the entire facility with every one in it and slowly ate it before going to a law enforcement office and hand all the prepetrator to them. After that he become a mercenary without weapons and always hungry for his apoment, he often just ate the entire ship of his target and hand them over later. He got the nickname "Ship Eater" since then.
